Designer 7046. 1973.
Lucious Isaac Sr. was born in Sumter on March 24, 1941, and died in nearby Florence on March 22, 2004. He was a driver for Infinger Transportation for thirty years and attended the Living Church of Jesus Christ in McBee. His obituary says that "his laughter was his trademark." Somebody managed to misspell his name on both this and the other Golden Five single that I've seen (also on Designer), one which Isaac turns in another lead performance. The recent Designer compilation by Big Legal Mess has another cut with Isaac on lead but it's unclear to me whether it was previously released.
This one is a longtime favorite of mine. There are some gospel standards that are almost always great, and Jesus is a Rock is one of those. But wow! This song seems designed to show off how charismatic a singer Lucious Isaac is. The ridiculously simple two chord instrumental persists through the entire song as the Golden Five run variations over it. The section between 0:30 and 1:00 is just unreal - two incredible screams by Isaac and the rest of the group turns in a brilliant backing vocal. If things had shaken out differently, Isaac might have had the stature of a Julius Cheeks or Willie Neal Johnson. He shows that kind of rare power.

I am always interested in hearing from members of groups and their families, as well as anyone who can help tell the story of these groups. I've recently decided to incorporate as much biographical information as I can track down about the groups whose records I post, and I'm going back through former posts as time permits to add as much information as possible. Names and biographies of group members, other groups that they played in, dates of releases, home cities of groups, information about labels - really anything is useful. The men and women who gave glory with this great music deserve to be remembered better.
My intent is to give people a way to hear this forgotten and hard to access music. All songs on this channel are recorded from my own collection. I do not own the copyright to this material. If you'd prefer that I not share the music you made or own the copyright for, please contact me I'll promptly remove the video.
